PILATES

Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise that helps to develop and maintain strength, balance, flexibility, muscle tone, posture and good breathing technique.

Pilates aims to strengthen the body in an even way, with particular emphasis on core strength to improve general fitness and wellbeing.

Pilates has something to offer people of all ages and levels of ability and fitness, from beginners to elite athletes.

For sports people, including dancers, gymnasts, golfers, tennis players and horse riders, pilates can complement training by developing whole-body strength and flexibility, and help reduce the risk of injury.

Pilates aims to strengthen your abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, and to stabilise your spine, whilst helping to mobilise your hip, knee and shoulder joints.

It will gradually increase your flexibility, and can provide pain relief to people with non-specific generalised lower back pain.

Pilates was developed by German-born Joseph Pilates, who believed mental and physical health were closely connected. Joseph Pilates originally devised more than 500 exercises for his system, of which 34 were mat exercises.

Pilates emphasises the connection between physical and mental health, and alongside the physical health and fitness benefits, regular pilates classes can help to relieve stress and tension.
